That's Some High Quality H2O!

Summer is here. Temperatures are on the rise, meaning workouts are hot and can sometimes feel sluggish. Skip the gym? Of course not! Instead, adjust your mindset and focus on hydration.

Dehydration can decrease performance by up to 20%! That's a lot! For example, if your fastest mile run is 6 minutes, decreasing it by 20% will add a full minute and twenty seconds to your time!

In addition to performance benefits; proper hydration lubricates joints, keeps organs functioning properly, aids in the elimination of waste, and can improve sleep quality and mood.

Tips for increasing your hydration:

  1. Focus on water and keep a reusable water bottle with you.

  2. Set a daily hydration goal (60 - 80oz.) and drink consistently throughout the day.

  3. Avoid sugary drinks and sweeteners - most sports drinks are loaded with sugar and not necessary for proper hydration.

  4. Trouble consuming enough water? A some flavor (mint or fruit), carbonation or drink with a straw.

What about electrolytes?

Electrolyte supplements are helpful for endurance training/events however not necessary for daily hydration. Instead, electrolytes can and should be obtained from whole foods, especially those rich in magnesium, potassium and sodium - leafy greens, bananas, coconut water, etc.
